The area is already over-populated with students
A CONTROVERSIAL bid to create digs for 250 students overlooking the Meadows is set to get the green light when it is reviewed by councillors this week.
The city's planning committee is expected to grant permission for the scheme on Wednesday, which would see 81 new flats built on Chalmers Street. The scheme has been backed by planning officials, who said the development was "appropriate for the city centre" and adequately safeguards the surrounding conservation area. However, the scheme has drawn criticism from local residents, who claim that the Meadows area is already over-populated with students, some of whom are responsible for late-night noise and damage to property. Councillors were originally due to consider the proposals for the former NCP car park on Chalmers Street last month, but the application was withdrawn after it emerged that the council had not consulted community leaders over the plans. Since then, formal consultation with Tollcross community council has been carried out and officials have recommended that more parking spaces be added into the scheme to address traffic concerns.
