The Enlightenment painter, Allan Ramsay was born. His father was another Allan Ramsay, well known for his poetry. After studying in Italy, Allan Jr. became renowned as one of the best portrait painters of the Rococo era, and painted subjects as important as the future King George III.

Savings had to be made after a series of complications
The Scottish Arts Council says a scaled-back revamp of the Usher Hall may not develop the venue to "21st century standards". It emerged this week that a £566,000 grant pledged by the body towards the refurbishment has been put on hold until the concerns are addressed.
